Should a therapist share their personal experience with a patient/client? Dr. Jessi Gold is a psychiatrist whose book, HOW DO YOU FEEL?, chronicles her experience as a doctor working in mental health helping healthcare workers. ⁠

Dr. Gold grapples with whether or not to share some of her own story with her patients to help them see they aren't alone and uses her own therapist as an example for herself. ⁠

This book was eye opening. I am one of those people (like Jessi!) who checks in with my therapist. I ask her how SHE is doing. I have never thought twice about it, but apparently this isn't the norm! Dr. Gold saw how opening up to some of her patients helped them with their own lives and she shares that in her book. ⁠

I felt connected, not only to Dr. Gold, but also to her patients and found myself wanting to know how they're doing and what their update was. This is part memoir, part research and it's also a look at what our healthcare workers were going through during a pandemic having to deal with their own mental health and the stigma of that in the healthcare industry. ⁠

I loved my conversation with Jessi because we are very much alike. I hope this conversation brings about more empathy for our healthcare professionals and what they are going through in helping all of us every day. ⁠

What's as important as sharing your story? Listening to the stories of others! How do you get someone to tell you their story when it's your father and he's a WWII veteran?⁠

Becky Ellis shares her story in her memoir, LITTLE AVALANCHES, and how her entire world changed when her father finally shared his story and experiences in WWII with her. Not only did it make their relationship better, but it was healing for both of them, as well as for generations of their family. ⁠

Becky and I share a mutual admiration and respect for our veterans which is why it's been so enjoyable to read her book, work together and share this incredible conversation with all of you. ⁠

Reading Becky's book opens your eyes and heart to why people might act the way they do. We don't know someone else's trauma or lived experience. We don't know exactly what has happened to them that has shaped their view of the world or is the reason behind the decisions they make. ⁠

My favorite thing Becky said was that this experience didn't give her closure...it opened her heart even more. ⁠

Every day I wake up and ask myself what I will bring to the day. What can I do to ensure the safety and happiness of my kids? How can I grow my business and podcast? How can I use my voice and encourage others to do the same in this current disaster climate filled with hate and fear? This morning was no different.

I saw an email come in last night from @shannonrwatts Substack and I opened it quickly while on the couch about to get sucked into RHOBH. I decided it was going to be a really good read that deserved my full attention and marked it as unread. With coffee in hand this morning, I read it thoroughly and the light bulbs went off. It’s entitled “A Woman’s Place Is In The Resistance”. Shannon lists out 8 ways we can take action. Below is what I felt directly applied to me and I found most encouraging because they’re things I’m already doing without even trying.

“Entrepreneurship: Start and grow your own businesses to increase your economic influence. Even in autocracies, women-owned businesses can drive economic growth and create jobs.” I’ve been doing this for 7 years now and often forget what an incredible impact owning a business has. I employ people and I contribute financially to our household.

@leahgreenb , co-founder of @indivisibleteam says we should find our community. By sharing my beliefs and voice, I am finding my community and you can do the same.

@rebeccaforassembly, California Assembly Member encourages us to use our voice. Not only do I use my voice on all of my platforms, but especially on my podcast, My Simplified Life. I also encourage every client I work with to use theirs. It’s literally my life’s work!

I would bet that you’re also doing things already that make you part of the resistance. Of course we can always do more, but I know that we are already on our way. If you haven’t read Shannon’s Substack, do so! She’s an incredibly beautiful human being inside and out and I’m so grateful for all she shares.

Use your voice. Share your story. Need help in doing that? I’m here. It’s what I do and I know the world needs to hear from each and every one of you.

Today we played tourists in San Francisco and visi

Today we played tourists in San Francisco and visited Alcatraz (first time for the kids). This was not only a great history lesson but also a way for us to thank our @nationalparkservice Big shout out to Ranger Matt for his warm welcome! The crowd cheered for our NPS multiple times!

There is a new exhibit (since the last time I’d been there) about mass incarceration in America and both kids found it eye opening and informative.

We rounded out our day trip with some ice cream sundaes from @ghirardelli of course!

Let your NPS and Park Rangers know they’re appreciated and needed! We are so grateful to have this literally in our backyard!

I used to think I didn't like suspense and yet I'm hooked on shows like Mayor Of Kingstown. I also love a great story about second chances and someone turning their life around...all reasons why I not only enjoyed reading THE BODY BROKERS but also getting to know Brian Cuban.⁠

Brian, (yes, he's Mark's brother) is an attorney and in long-term recovery from alcohol, cocaine and bulimia. He's also an author and speaker sharing his story to help others. I greatly appreciate Brian's honesty and openness and believe that makes him an incredibly brave person.⁠

Brian weaves his experience as a lawyer into THE BODY BROKERS as we follow Jason on his quest to find his girlfriend's killer. He brings to light the fentanyl epidemic that our country is seeing along with themes of addiction, trust and friendship. It is definitely a page turner! ⁠

I am so grateful Brian shared his personal story with me (and all of you!). He's definitely an inspiration and his tenacity deserves to be applauded. I love how he's able to take his experience and create entertaining stories for us to read and learn from. ⁠
