🎁 THE SMALL AND THE MIGHTY by @sharonsaysso is an absolute gift! 🎁

I don’t normally post individual book reviews but this book is anything but normal. It’s extraordinary!

Like many, I have often wondered if what I do and say makes a difference. After all, I’m just one person. We read about those who have made their mark on the world and know their names but Sharon McMahon introduces us to people who made their mark in big ways yet most of us don’t know their names. They are the small. They are the mighty.

I checked out a copy from my library and then went ahead and ordered multiple copies to be delivered (you can buy one, get one half off on Amazon and Target right now!). This book needs to be on your bookshelf and read by every member of your family.

My review…

This book belongs on every bookshelf of every American and should be required reading. I cried. I was educated. I was enlightened. I was encouraged. Many names I recognized throughout the book while also learning new names and discovering what so many Americans did to help shape the world we live in today. Everyday people took a stand, fought for what was right, sacrificed for the better of others...all while being just like you and me.

Sharon McMahon has given us a true gift with this book. As someone who often asks what more can I do, this book has shown me that there’s a lot I can do. I feel such gratitude for those who have come before me, including Dan Inouye and Norm Mineta since they have San Jose ties. Reading about the many Black women who have fought for equal rights for decades and continue to fight leaves me breathless and in awe. These women are the strongest and I so appreciate each and every one of them.

I cried reading how it feels that history feels like it’s currently trying to repeat itself and how we need to be the small and mighty who stand up to ensure our country doesn’t go backwards and repeat itself. We know better, therefore we need to do better.

As I wrapped presents this morning, I thought about Rubi and Erin’s families and how they have presents to wrap for them but no longer have them to give the presents to.

Then I thought about who is funding the NRA and started to Google. Yes, the majority are the NRA members but then I found that the top private donor also used to own an aviation company that I did a lot of work with. I set up their fuel supply and saved the company a ton of money on fuel for their aircraft

If you hear me share what the biggest driving force was for me to leave corporate aviation, it’s that I didn’t feel like I was making a positive change in the world for my children’s future.

This is the evidence right here that I made the right decision.

I feel very strongly about not supporting the businesses of those who support things I don’t believe in or treat people in ways that go against my belief. I don’t eat at Chick Fil A, avoid Walmart at all costs, speak out against PG&E and more. I’m saddened to know that for years I unknowingly supported a business owner who was shoveling the savings I made for him to fund an organization that has no problem with the safety of my children at school being threatened and innocent children being murdered at school.

Listen to your gut. Do your research. Take a stand.

Join organizations and causes that are advocating for what you believe in. @momsdemand @everytown are great examples.

I’m not perfect and I’m learning along the way but I know my gut hasn’t steered me wrong and I will do my best to ensure that the businesses and people I align with also value what I value. The safety of children in schools is a top priority for me.

Zelly joined me to share how she came up with the book and how her previous job of being an adoption social worker played a part in this book. She's also sharing how later on she struggled with fertility issues and wonders if she could have done her job had she known. ⁠

I love Zelly and we've been lucky enough to meet almost a year ago in NYC and spend the day together. This was a blast to get to talk all about her book and the stories behind it!⁠

Oprah interviewed Claire Keegan last week and Claire shared how when we can’t feel sadness, we lack empathy. I want for each and every one of us to be able to feel when we hear the stories of others. If we can feel sad for what someone else has experienced, then we can empathize and start to understand.

Growing up in another country comes with very different cultural identities, influences and traditions that Americans aren't always familiar with. ⁠

Jasmin Faulk-Dickerson was born and raised in Saudi Arabia and lived there during the Gulf War. Although her parents were very progressive, she still lived with Saudi traditions outside of her house and to a certain extent, even within the walls of her home. ⁠
⁠
Jasmin details what it was like growing up in a country where women needed permission for most things, where mainstream media and shows weren't the norm and how war changed that. ⁠

Seeing friends whose ultimate goals were to all get married right away, Jasmin wanted more for herself. Ultimately, she left for America and has made an incredible life here with love and a family. As a social identity advocate she promotes gender equality, ethical equity, and social justice. ⁠

I'm so grateful to Matt Gilhooly of The Life Shift podcast for bringing Jasmin and I together and for Jasmin to share her story with all of us. Want to know why I started “Books By The Fire” to share books that publishers, authors and publicists send me?

As an author, I know what it means to have someone share your book. I also know what it feels like to send your book out to the masses and not have it be shared.

I always share books that I’m sent. I also read cover to cover every book of every author I interview (and those of my clients’!).

My next goal is to start sharing the advanced copies I’m receiving digitally because they also deserve to be shared.

I’m reading the books, reviewing them and sharing them and often times, inviting the authors to join me on my podcast. We are talking about life lessons and personal journeys. No topic is off limits!

Know that if you send me your book, I treasure it. I’m just like Oprah…our books are like our Tupperware…they don’t leave the house!

We have an Advent calendar in our house and I spend weeks planning out activities, buying tickets or getting slots for things, scheduling playdates, getting a new holiday book and more. THE CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN is not only the adult version of this but one that makes Callie explore and find who she was before her heart was broken. ⁠

Like me, Hannah Mary is also half Swiss, so of course her main character, Callie is also half Swiss which made the cookie references so much more sweeter! ⁠
