Jena’s Career Story To Becoming A Career Coach
Jena’s career story starts like a lot of ours with a college major that she later discovered wasn’t right for her. After working in investment banking on Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange, Jena was given the opportunity to explore other positions, such as marketing, PR, and video recording from the live floor. By trying other tasks, she was able to discover what she was good at and what she enjoyed doing. Jena then went to work for the start-up company, TheMuse.com, a career advice site and discover even more job opportunities. By taking these “quarter turns” in her career, Jena was able to find clarity in her career and became a career coach at the age of 25. She started out by helping people revamp their resumes and realized she was good at making career pivots and helping others make them.
How Entrepreneurs Should Use LinkedIn
LinkedIn isn’t simply a job search platform and is one of the best kept social media and thought leadership tools out there! Jena shares how she realized her clientele were on LinkedIn, looking for her services, and how LinkedIn allows you to be a thought leader in your space while also accessing corporate partners. LinkedIn gives you the opportunity to physically connect with your ideal clients instead of simply creating content in the hopes of attracting them. Companies are hiring you and your brand which is why a personal profile versus a business profile is key.
If you’re an entrepreneur and recognize your ideal clients are on LinkedIn, then you should be posting at a minimum once week, but to aim for 1-2 times per day. Jena suggests creating posts with a call to action, story-telling content with teaching moments, community building posts that allow people to connect with one another, and quick tips. When you create great content that gains traction, it’ll show up not only in your feed, but in the feeds of those who comment and like your post as well.
Lastly, be sure to connect with others and write customized messages in your DMs. LinkedIn is NOT like Facebook in the sense that you aren’t trying to friend people. You are looking for network connections, so get out there and link in with your ideal clients!
A Career Coach For Your Corporate Career
Jena’s career coaching clients all encompass an entrepreneurial spirit and most are on a dual track process which incorporates their corporate job and a side hustle. The 3 things Jena helps her clients uncover are: 1) What is it you want?, 2) Where are you thriving, and 3) How do you take a quarter turn closer to that? She shares how side hustles allow us to not have pressure to perform at higher levels because they aren’t our sole income. Having a side hustle allows you to scale at a rapid pace when you decide to take it full time because you’ve already gained the clarity you need and know what you love to do and what you don’t. A career coach gives you a 30,000 foot view from an outside perspective to look at your career as a whole and discern where you’ve been. Clarity is one of the best returns on investment you can get!
