𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿

𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵. 💙

I’ve always believed that 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 — and I’ve made it a point to encourage my kids to read stories that open their hearts and minds to experiences different from their own. Because 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 is what makes us better humans.

But lately, I’ve been thinking about this even more. We now have an 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 who publicly stated that “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘤𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘺.” Honestly? I couldn’t disagree more.

Empathy isn’t weakness — it’s 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲. 💪

My father-in-law fought in WWII. My husband is very active with WWII veterans, & the friendships we’ve built with them are incredibly special to our family. So when my son recently chose the book 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘖𝘶𝘳𝘴, a story about 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗲 — two of whom are Jewish — at the start of WWII, we knew it was going to be an important read.

We’ve been reading it 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, chapter by chapter, so we can talk about it. Most days? He’s cried. 💔 He’s learning what it was like for Jewish children to suddenly lose their rights, their friends, their access to school — simply because of who they were. While it’s hard to watch him cry, I’m so proud of him for feeling it so deeply.

Because 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 is what it means to raise a 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 — someone who listens, feels, and cares about others. Someone who understands that strength is standing beside the oppressed, not ignoring their pain. Someone who knows that empathy is never, ever a weakness.

So yeah — I’ll keep handing my kids books that break their hearts a little. 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘁. ❤️

I love reading a book that is so applicable to lif

I love reading a book that is so applicable to life to today and experiencing ah ha moments that run deep.

I’m reading BEARER OF BAD NEWS by @elisabethdiniauthor and am thoroughly enjoying it. There is a big theme around WWII which certainly peaks my interest and this quote from the book popped up today where a woman is being interviewed about what she did as part of the resistance fighting against H!tler and the Naz!s.

Beauty is a form of resistance when the world is so ugly…

Right now we need beauty and joy more than ever. It is powerful to find such things when there is so much chaos, hate and downright stupidity going on in our country.

Buy the bouquet. Smile. Laugh. Have the dance party.

We’ll continue to resist but we also deserve to see the beauty around us.

I am so grateful for the women in my life. They are consistent, supportive and absolute blessings.

I did notice that we don’t take nearly enough photos though…that’s going to have to change!

I’m so lucky to call these women friends and am in awe of all they do in the world…as women, as moms, as friends, as partners, as businesswomen, as activists and so much more.

🌺 There is truly nothing better than reading an incredible book and then getting to talk to the author ALL about it and asked your burning questions! 🌺

I’m so excited that I got to be the conversation partner this evening for @nandareddyauthor whose book A GIRL WITHIN A GIRL WITHIN A GIRL was published this week by Zibby Publishing.

We gathered at @bookpassageferrybuilding and my trusty sidekick joined me…she even included a cameo of herself in the video!

Nanda’s book is incredible and she had me crying at the end! The book is about a Guyanese girl who is essentially trafficked to America and her painful journey of trying to escape the life she now has in America…only for it to haunt her as an adult when she has to face it again. It’s a must-read!

This story is not a memoir, it's a work of fiction but it definitely weaves in parts of Lisa and her family in a beautiful way that not only allows you to get to know Lisa and her story but to also understand what life is like for so many who can't live their true lives because of the stigma that still exists around being gay. ⁠

Lisa and I chat about her life as an attorney before becoming a writer and how as lovers of the law, we both love storytelling. We also discuss the importance of empathy and how it can be built through works of fiction. ⁠
