I'm 50% Swiss and have been to Switzerland twice with my mom (born there!, so reading this book set in Zermatt, Switzerland was absolute bliss! I could taste the pastries and fondue, picture the gorgeous scenery and felt like I was right back there!⁠

It was such a treat to get to chat with Meg on the podcast again (she joined me for the debut of SUPER BLOOM and we've gotten to meet in person too!) and we talked about being mothers, as well as daughters, and how that played an important part of the book, how our children react to their moms being authors, her writing journey and how different this one was to the last and forgiveness. ⁠

Grab a cozy drink, your favorite blanket and curl up into this terrific book! You will definitely enjoy it and most likely want to book a trip to Switzerland!⁠

Books are powerful. They transport us to new place

Books are powerful. They transport us to new places, they allow us to use our imaginations and they bring the stories of others to the forefront.

When someone takes their life experience and puts it into words to share with readers, we’ve just been given the biggest gift possible…the opportunity to learn, to build empathy and to understand someone else’s journey.

I met Louis L Reed virtually 3 years ago when he agreed to sit down for an interview with me. He was generous in sharing his story, experiences and answered all of my questions. Louis has been helping so many others with his story from speaking, to helping pass The First Step Act, to podcasting and doing interviews, to producing to Hulu’s UnPrisoned.

Now…he’s written a book called DEUCE’S FIRST STEP: REBUILDING ONE PIECE AT A TIME.

It’s a children’s book that offers hope and healing for children affected by parental incarceration. Inspired by his own experiences growing up with an incarcerated father, this book follows Deuce, a young boy who struggles with his father’s absence but learns to rebuild his life one small step at a time. Louis’ mission is to get this book into the hands of 1 million children, letting them know they are seen, supported, and not alone in their journey.

It’s a beautiful book and comes out next month. On any given day, 5 million children in the US have had a parent incarcerated at some point in their life. These children need to know they’re not alone and this book will not only help them but help each of us to understand what they’re feeling.

Louis, I’m so proud to know you and absolutely blessed to call you my friend!

Grateful for these three humans who cheer me on daily. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are enjoying these days off to watch holiday movies, football and read by the fire.

This morning I wrote on Substack about two topics that I’ve seen pop up more and more this week…community and loneliness.

Many of us feel lonely, whether we admit it or even define it specifically. We want community, to feel a part of a group, to feel supported and connected. How do we find or create that community? How can we build it without feeling like we’re going at it alone?

These thoughts and questions have been percolating for me after meeting Shannon Watts and reading her substack, reading NEW HAPPY and getting to talk to Stephanie Harrison (catch her interview on the podcast in December!) and scrolling through social media.

If you’ve been thinking about these things, know that you’re not alone because I’m right there with you and I believe there are many more out there wanting the same things.

In the meantime, I’m going to keep reading and podcasting…and sharing all of it with you.

I’ve got two winter must-reads for you that have

I’ve got two winter must-reads for you that have become dear to my heart AND you can catch interviews with both authors coming up!

I’m half Swiss. My mom was born and raised in Switzerland and I’ve been lucky enough to visit twice (need to plan another trip). I was so giddy to discover that both of these fun reads had Swiss components and I can’t stop gushing about them!

In BLUEBIRD DAY by Meg Tady (out on 12/3), the entire novel takes place in Switzerland! It took me right back to visiting there over 20 years ago and of course has food components which brought me back to childhood.

In THE CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN (out now!) by Holly Cassidy (the romcom pen for Hannah Mary McKinnon…that’s her thriller name!) has the main character, Callie, making Swiss treats because she’s half Swiss. I could taste the Swiss cookies that were being made and it’s inspired me to get my Swiss baking on!

You know I’m loving my books by the fire and both of these reads not only kept me laughing (and crying) but they transported me to winter! I highly recommend both of these books and can’t wait to share my interviews with you (Meg airs 12/3 and Hannah Mary airs 12/12)!

Now I need to find my Swiss cookie recipes and get baking!

Audacity…do you have enough of it?

When I became a mom, I became someone else. I am someone who has always been vocal and stood up for what I felt was right, but motherhood amped that up. It also brought to light new issues I am passionate about.

As my kids started school, I discovered the incredible Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, author FIGHT LIKE A MOTHER and the upcoming book, FIRED UP, and organizer of White Women For Harris.

Shannon has the ultimate audacity. She speaks up, she speaks out and she fiercely protects those she loves. She’s a mom.

Tonight, thanks to Shana McLean Moore, Shannon came to San Jose and I got to hug her, thank her and listen to her speak in person. A community of women came together and we left fired up!

I didn’t raise my hand when she asked who is considering running for office, but if I’m honest, it’s been a thought on my mind for a while now. We shall see…

I want to be audacious AF. I want to help other women be audacious and for us to come together to make a difference and stand up for others and ourselves.
