There’s a perception that if you’re pitching yourself to do podcast interviews, then you’re promoting yourself. Self-promotion…the act of furthering one’s own growth, advancement, or prosperity. Well, that sounds slimy, but it doesn’t have to be.
Podcast interviews are a form of self-promotion but they shouldn’t come off as such and they won’t, if you do it the right way.
The Right Way To Do Podcast Interviews
I’ve had clients worried that with all of the turmoil going on in our world, they don’t feel comfortable promoting their interviews. I’ve had clients who don’t feel comfortable putting themselves out there to say “interview me because I’m an expert”, because that’s not their personality.
A podcast interview is a way for you to give back to others freely. You have experience and knowledge that you can share to help others in their life and businesses. You have a story that resonates with listeners. We are all on a journey in life and although it may feel like we’re alone, the truth is that someone out there has gone through what you’re going through. Sharing your story is a way to make others feel less alone.
Podcast interviews are ways to inspire, motivate and know that others empathize with you. It’s a way to change the world…one voice at a time.
Don't Promote Yourself
My philosophy when it comes to why you should be a guest on podcasts is not to promote yourself. It’s to share your knowledge, expertise and tips with the audience. This is a big part of why I create speaking topics that aren’t solely around someone’s business service or product or an author’s book. A podcast interview is an intimate conversation in which you have the opportunity to share yourself with another person and ultimately with all of those who listen.
This isn’t a “look at me!” moment…it’s a “I’m sharing my story/knowledge/experience in the hopes that it helps you” moment.
How To Tie In Promotion
Now you might be saying that’s great, but I want to promote myself as well, so how does that tie into it? The key is in being yourself and allowing people to get to know you and what you’re about before they even schedule an initial meeting with you. Spark their curiosity with how freely you share your knowledge. Don’t try to sell yourself or your service or your book. Be you. It’s what will attract clients, followers, readers and more.
Next week, I’ll dive into how you can promote and repurpose your interviews….until then, simply show up and share of yourself!
