Last week I offered up my two cents about self-promotion and how to alleviate any fear or hesitation around it in regards to pitching yourself to podcasts. Let’s now dive in on how to promote your podcast interviews. Some might consider this self-promotion, but it’s also the way you thank the podcast host. Showing up to record the interview is only the first step…
Podcasts are promoted naturally on podcast listening platforms, but it takes actual effort to market them. This is a big reason why hosts and guests alike don’t see more downloads or a greater ROI on their shows or interviews. It’s like sending that initial cold email and hoping that’s all it takes….in reality, to make a sale it takes 7 touches (I actually read that these days, it takes 8 touches!). Therefore, relying on someone to simply find your interview on Spotify or Apple Podcasts or wherever they happen to listen to podcasts just isn’t good enough.
There are a ton of ways you can promote your podcast interviews, but we’ll start with some basic ones that don’t take a ton of effort, yet will not only make a big difference for you but for the podcast host as well.
Social Media
Chances are that you have at least one social media account, whether that’s Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. You can (and should) share with your followers when the episode airs. Most, not all, hosts will provide you with social media assets that you can use on your platforms. You can always create your own graphics to promote the episode too.
If you’re creating your own graphics, be sure to include the podcast cover art, podcast name, episode title and episode number!
You can also create quote graphics and include the podcast name and episode in which you are quoting yourself from. This may seem odd at first to be quoting yourself. I get that because it felt a bit silly when I started using my own quotes. I’d been quoting Michelle Obama or Oprah in my feed for inspiration, yet I had inspirational things to say as well…and had said them in interviews! This is how you will be elevated as a thought leader…let followers hear what you’re saying by showing them the words you’ve already said.
Email List
Hopefully you’ve started an email list. If not, now’s the time! Let your readers know where they can listen to your interviews by hyperlinking them in your weekly or monthly newsletter.
Website
Your podcast interviews should definitely be showing up on your website. At the very least, they should all be on your press or media page. Want to take it up a notch? Create blog posts for your interviews!
Don’t forget that in all of the places you share your podcast interviews, they’re places that are filled with people who WANT to hear from you. They’ve followed you, they’ve subscribed to your newsletter, they’ve gone to your website. These people are searching you out and you’re simply letting them know where else they can find you!
