Chances are that you know one of these children, whether you are aware of it or not. ⁠
⁠
How do we support these kids? How do we let them know that they aren't alone and to ensure they are given the tools they need to succeed?⁠

Louis L. Reed is joining me (again!) to share his newest children's book, DEUCE'S FIRST STEP. Deuce is a little boy whose father is incarcerated and with the help of his friend Scarlett and an encouraging social worker, Mrs. Jackson, he learns that taking small, steady steps can give him a bright future. ⁠

This book is a needed resource for impacted children. It's a resource for classmates, teachers, caretakers and anyone looking to positively influence a child who is working to overcome such challenges. ⁠

I appreciate Louis...for sharing his personal story of incarceration, of being a child of incarcerated parents and for making a difference in the world to help others. This book is going to help so many children and I'm not simply saying that...I mean it and have already ensured it's gotten into the hands of a child who needs it. ⁠

It seems we could all use a collective dog snuggle right about now.

There’s so much loss and pain, trauma that is new and old that is resurfacing…what we all need is empathy.

The reason I do everything I do is to try to build more empathy in our world, more compassion for one another. This week I’ve seen extreme empathy and compassion, as well as extreme hatred online. It shows the need for more empathy…

Today @brandencollinsworth had a beautiful post about empathy (sharing it in my stories). Empathy is what allows us to not only hear a story but to feel it, to breathe it. It connects us. It’s not about fixing or solving but about being still, being present and allowing your heart to open wide enough to hold someone’s sorrow.

I hope and pray we can collectively come together right now and show empathy, love and kindness. There are people who have lost everything they’ve known, people who have a home but no neighbors left, people who are reliving the trauma of having been through this before.

They’re all people though. Human beings like you and I.

We are all doing our best. Smile at someone this week. Reach out to a friend just to check in. Hug your partner, kids, pet. Give yourself space and time to breathe.

We are in this together.

As I watch fires devastating entire cities, homes

As I watch fires devastating entire cities, homes and lives, my heart breaks. I cringe at the misinformation over budget cuts and fire hydrants being empty, over people who say “it’s just stuff” or “let’s rebuild”…there is no room for any of that. NONE! This is a traumatic experience for those in Los Angeles, as well as those watching and reliving what happened to them in Paradise and Maui.

When you lose your home, you lose more than “stuff”. There are things that maybe to you and me or anyone else appears to be “stuff” but there’s significance behind it. In my closet, in a small box, there is a paper chain that is stuffed into a grocery bag. To a stranger, it’s just a paper chain that a kid probably made. To me, it’s the paper chain that I made with my father 38 years ago (2 years before he passed away). We were making it for Christmas, so it is red, white and green, but then I ran out of construction paper and it became a chain of all colors. I have taken this paper chain in a box with me to every home I’ve lived in since I graduated college in 2003. Somehow it has survived moves, being put up and taken down every Christmas, a puppy and two children. It is a memory as much as it is “stuff”.

This is going to be a long grieving period…one which never really goes away. There will be grief for those who live there, those who have lived there and even those who have simply visited and made memories.

By now it should be obvious that I am not only a fan of podcasts but also politics. I like to be involved and informed. I think there is nothing more powerful than casting your vote, using your voice and standing up for what you believe in. ⁠

When I endorsed Kamala Harris as one of 700 writers, I met the most incredible, kind and hardworking person....Victor Shi. Victor was the Youth Campaign Director for the Harris campaign and had previously worked on the Biden Harris campaign among many others. He's internet in the White House and his political activism is almost a decade old...despite him only being 22! ⁠

Victor started campaigning for a local candidate at the age of 13 and found his calling. He loves people and politics and is an absolutely incredible human being. ⁠

I asked Victor not only about his experience but about what he thinks will help move the needle as we go forward with future elections. We discussed the importance of community (a theme that continues to be brought up) and how podcasts played a role in this election and will continue to do so.⁠

I'm so proud to know Victor, to call him my friend and to witness this young man working so hard to make our country a better place for all of us. Thank you Victor for all you do! As a constituent, I'm grateful. As your friend, I'm proud of you. ⁠

Amy and I are talking about the fact that when you take on tasks and make it look easy, you will most certainly be asked to take on more. People might stop offering to help because it just looks like you've got it all covered. ⁠

We are talking about social media and the look of perfection, tools to ensure you only do as much as you can handle at once and embracing your identity of being a "doer" because it's who you are and that's not a bad thing. ⁠

As we launch into a new year, let's embrace who we naturally are, but let's normalize asking for help, not always being the first to raise our hands and being ok with sometimes not raising our hands at all. I've been practicing lately and surprise, things still get done! ⁠

My Simplified Life podcast moved to two episodes per week last month. To be honest with you, I could do an interview every day but I'm not sure my reading could keep up with it! (Yes, I'm reading every word of every book!)⁠

My conversation with Lauren Ling Brown was so incredible and I would be remiss if I didn’t share more of it with you all (you should really just listen to the full episode!).

I am all about empathy…we cannot grow as individuals or as a community if we don’t have empathy for others. Just because you haven’t experienced something directly, does not mean that you can share in the sadness, grief, happiness, fear or any other emotion that an experience can bring in.

Books allow us to build empathy. Podcasts allow us to build empathy. Listening is what builds empathy.

Thank you Lauren for building empathy through your book and sharing it with all of us.
