I am SO proud to be part of "270 Reasons", a project created by Dave Eggers where writers share why we’re supporting Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.⁠

My reason is simple...my children. ⁠
⁠
I want my children to not only retain their rights but to look up to leaders who are kind. They lead by example and care about ALL people. ⁠
⁠
Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are good human beings. I want my children to be good human beings just as I'm striving to be a good human. ⁠
⁠

I’m happy. Yet, I’ve felt unsettled for some reason. Am I doing what I’m meant to be doing? Is what I’m doing enough and making a true difference? If I dabble in something “outside of my lane”, then am I making a wrong move? If I want to do more, do I have shiny object syndrome or simply dreams to chase?

This book helped me realize not only why I’m doing what I’m doing, but also why I am the way I am. I experienced loss as a child and that taught me early on to lead with compassion, empathy and sensitivity, to care about all I come in contact with and to always listen closely when someone shares their story with me. It’s the reason I want to tell the stories of more people, read books, learn about authors behind books, help people reach one another on a greater scale.

I am doing what I’m meant to be doing AND my want and need for growth isn’t shiny object syndrome…it’s who I am and it makes sense that I would want to scale what I have already created.

I am so immensely proud of my friends who have contributed to ON BEING JEWISH NOW and they deserve to be celebrated for their courage, honesty and bravery. Sharing your stories and experiences is a big deal and I want them to know how proud of them I am. ⁠

I received an advanced reader copy of ON BEING JEWISH NOW and I am so grateful for the many personal stories and experiences shared in this anthology. I am not Jewish, but you don't have to be to be outraged by what happened not only on October 7th but continues to happen every day in our country...acts of antisemitism. I have many friends who are Jewish and have been deeply saddened and angry on their behalf for the acts of hatred that are occurring simply because of their religion. ⁠
⁠
Having friends and relatives who fought in WWII (one who is 103) and hearing firsthand what they saw during the Holocaust has made me want to ensure all Jewish people are able to simply live as they are...a freedom many of us take for granted all too often. ⁠
⁠
I personally know a number of the authors included in this book and despite that, I still learned more about their journeys and experiences by reading these essays. There is always more to learn from others and this book gives us the opportunity to expand our empathy for our Jewish friends, to understand how very personal this is and to do better on behalf of them. ⁠

Yes, friends, it certainly is!⁠

Katie Prentiss was (and still is!) a photographer and mother, but at one point she felt the undeniable tug to try her hand at acting. She walked by a film production and vowed to be on set one day. ⁠
⁠
Not only did Katie make her acting dream come true, but she’s also now a filmmaker! Her upcoming feature length film, WAKE UP MAGGIE, is a personal story that tackles frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and what it’s like to be a caregiver. ⁠

Finding meaning in your career, sharing your personal story to help others and love what you do are gifts we give to ourselves. Katie has done all of this and is truly an inspiration with her story. ⁠

Katie is the example of what I want to strive to be...unafraid of trying new things, going for it and making a difference in the lives of others with what we do. ⁠

Shaka from Maui…thank you, things are great, take it easy, right on…

And hello to another Monday…thanks to @fourthousandmondays, I remind myself not to take a single one for granted. Thank you Jodi for the tattoo that traveled with me just so I could capture this Monday moment! I have roughly 2100 more Mondays left and spending it like this is exactly what I want.

On our flight here we learned that a dear friend of ours passed away. She was like a second mom/aunt to our happy hour crew (the actual aunt of one!) and someone I often turned to for advice. She had lived for a number of years in Hawaii and I picked her brain about moving here every chance I got.

Last weekend we got to see her at a dinner party and I took some time to sit down and thank her for all of her wisdom and advice she’d given me over the years. I wanted her to know what she’s meant to our family but I had no idea that a week later she wouldn’t be with us.

As we count the Mondays we have left, let this be a reminder to not only spend them the way we want but to also tell those we love and admire that they’re amazing.

This is exactly why pitching your book to podcast hosts doesn't work...we aren't interviewing your book...we're interviewing YOU! ⁠

Podcast pitches that are only about a book don't land interviews. Yes, your book is amazing and valuable and entertaining, but the book isn't going to hold a conversation with a podcast host. ⁠
⁠
YOU, the human being behind the book and the beautiful words is what is going to make for a great conversation. ⁠
⁠
When you pitch yourself to be a guest on podcasts, be sure to pitch yourself. Of course your book can be included but remember that the interview is with YOU, not your book. ⁠

I receive pitches every single week that are about books launching. They don't tell me a thing about the author but it's the author I want to get to know. It's the person I want to talk to. The human connection and conversation...⁠
