I’m not going to replay the events of today because I’m angry, disappointed, hurt and yet I’m not surprised. We expected this. We knew this is how it was going to play out but finally seeing it happen is beyond disturbing.

Now is not the time to remain silent. Now is the time to keep going.

How do we keep going? How do we connect with people who want what we do and build community?

Today, I chatted with my friend and neighbor. I texted friends checking in. I reached out to my friends in the LGBTQIA+ community letting them know I’m here for them. I read my book (current read is Let Them by @melrobbins). I made chocolate chip pancakes for dinner because I felt like we needed them. I listened to @emilyinyourphone and @shannonrwatts go live on Substack. I told a family member I didn’t appreciate an insensitive post and when she didn’t back down, I unfriended her…Let Them do as they want but Let Me take action to protect myself.

I’ve decided I’m going to start a book club where we will dive into a book a month that will help us build as a community, take action and use our voices. I’m also thinking of throwing in a just for fun book as well because I believe in balance!

I’m going to work on the details but we’ll start with DEMOCRACY IN RETROGRADE. If you’d like to join, please grab the book from your favorite bookstore. I’ll share details in my Substack on Friday. I’m going to have a virtual option and possibly an in person for San Jose.

Love, empathy and action.

Those are the principles on which I’m raising my children and how I lead my life. I am not perfect by any means, but like many others, I’m learning and doing the best I know how.

Today, let us focus on remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and all he stood for. He is the example we should looking at.

Dr. King advocated for equality…that does not come without empathy and action.

Let us take action by building community with one another. Let someone know that you appreciate them, the work they do, how they show up as your friend…

I appreciate you all.

Every week I'm sharing the life lessons guests share on my podcast on my Substack, but I've realized there are so many life lessons I'm learning every single day.

This month I started reading THE PIVOT YEAR by @briannawiest and journaling about it daily with my friend @mandiebrice. There was a day this week in which we were reminded that we don't have to be thankful for the events that got us to where we are...the painful, traumatic ones. You know..t.he ones where people might say "well, it made you stronger" or "you wouldn't be the person you are today, if it hadn't been for...".

We don't have to be grateful for those moments. That's eye opening for me because I have allowed myself to be grateful for the negative stuff making me who I am, but I don't need to be.

I am grateful for moments that remind us of who we are and where we come from though. I'm grateful for my fellow Californians who are coming together in miraculous ways, along with our neighbors from other states and countries!

I'm grateful for the ability to use my voice to advocate for what I believe in as well as call out companies or politicians who I don't believe are supporting us.

I'm grateful for people like Martin Luther King, Jr. for standing up for others and using his voice to create change.

I'm grateful for the people in my life and I'm going to take that gratitude into the weekend with me.

Cindy Muchnick joined me to talk about how we can let our kids gain independence, find their way and advocate for themselves (without micromanaging parents!) and the importance of building community for yourself and your child. We also dished about the college admissions scandal!⁠

I'm a believer in being an active and present parent but that we also need to let our kids make their own mistakes and learn to ask for help when they need it. It's certainly not easy but it teaches our children to be the people they're meant to be and to succeed. ⁠

It seems we could all use a collective dog snuggle

It seems we could all use a collective dog snuggle right about now.

There’s so much loss and pain, trauma that is new and old that is resurfacing…what we all need is empathy.

The reason I do everything I do is to try to build more empathy in our world, more compassion for one another. This week I’ve seen extreme empathy and compassion, as well as extreme hatred online. It shows the need for more empathy…

Today @brandencollinsworth had a beautiful post about empathy (sharing it in my stories). Empathy is what allows us to not only hear a story but to feel it, to breathe it. It connects us. It’s not about fixing or solving but about being still, being present and allowing your heart to open wide enough to hold someone’s sorrow.

I hope and pray we can collectively come together right now and show empathy, love and kindness. There are people who have lost everything they’ve known, people who have a home but no neighbors left, people who are reliving the trauma of having been through this before.

They’re all people though. Human beings like you and I.

We are all doing our best. Smile at someone this week. Reach out to a friend just to check in. Hug your partner, kids, pet. Give yourself space and time to breathe.

We are in this together.

As I watch fires devastating entire cities, homes

As I watch fires devastating entire cities, homes and lives, my heart breaks. I cringe at the misinformation over budget cuts and fire hydrants being empty, over people who say “it’s just stuff” or “let’s rebuild”…there is no room for any of that. NONE! This is a traumatic experience for those in Los Angeles, as well as those watching and reliving what happened to them in Paradise and Maui.

When you lose your home, you lose more than “stuff”. There are things that maybe to you and me or anyone else appears to be “stuff” but there’s significance behind it. In my closet, in a small box, there is a paper chain that is stuffed into a grocery bag. To a stranger, it’s just a paper chain that a kid probably made. To me, it’s the paper chain that I made with my father 38 years ago (2 years before he passed away). We were making it for Christmas, so it is red, white and green, but then I ran out of construction paper and it became a chain of all colors. I have taken this paper chain in a box with me to every home I’ve lived in since I graduated college in 2003. Somehow it has survived moves, being put up and taken down every Christmas, a puppy and two children. It is a memory as much as it is “stuff”.

This is going to be a long grieving period…one which never really goes away. There will be grief for those who live there, those who have lived there and even those who have simply visited and made memories.
